Wiper Blade Replacement: When and How

Written by Muneeb Rana · Last updated 21 October 2026

Quick answer: Wiper blade replacement is usually needed every 6 to 12 months, or as soon as blades streak, smear, chatter, skip or leave unwiped areas. Sun, heat and ice harden the rubber. Check your sizes in the owner's manual or a parts store lookup; front blades are often different lengths. Most blades clip on in a couple of minutes.

TL;DR

  • Replace every 6-12 months or when streaking starts.
  • Driver and passenger sizes often differ.
  • Fitting takes minutes with no tools.

Wiper blade replacement is the easiest maintenance job on a car, and one that matters for safety in rain and snow. Here's when to do it and how.

Signs your wipers are worn

  • Streaks or smears.
  • Chattering or skipping.
  • Unwiped arcs.
  • Cracked, split or hardened rubber.
  • Bent frames.

Choosing the right blades

Check the sizes in your manual or with a parts store lookup by make and model. Beam-style blades suit winter because they have fewer joints to freeze; conventional framed blades are cheaper. Don't forget the rear wiper if you have one. Many testers, including in UK MOTs, check that wipers clear the screen effectively (car inspection checklist).

How to fit them

  1. Lift the arm away from the windscreen; put a towel on the glass in case it snaps back.
  2. Press the release tab and slide the old blade off the hook.
  3. Slide the new blade on until it clicks.
  4. Lower the arm gently and test with washer fluid.

Make them last

Clean blades with washer fluid or a damp cloth, use the right washer fluid in winter, and don't run them on ice. Add a reminder for each autumn with the service reminder tool, and check them on the car maintenance checklist. New to car care? See car maintenance for beginners and seasonal car maintenance. FAQ

How often should wiper blades be replaced?

Typically every 6-12 months, or as soon as they streak, chatter or skip.

Why are my new wiper blades streaking?

The windscreen may be dirty or waxy, or the blade is the wrong size or not seated properly. Clean the glass and check the fit.

Are driver and passenger wipers the same size?

Often not. Check your manual or a parts lookup.

Are expensive wiper blades worth it?

Beam blades can perform better in winter. For most drivers, replacing blades on time matters more than the brand.

Can worn wipers fail an inspection?

Yes. In the UK, wipers and washers must clear the windscreen effectively to pass the MOT.
