10,000 km Service Checklist
Written by Muneeb Rana · Last updated 21 October 2026
Quick answer: A 10,000 km service (about 6,200 miles) is a regular service in many countries: oil and filter change, tire rotation, a check of brakes, fluids, lights and wipers, and a look at the cabin air filter. Many manufacturers schedule it every 10,000 km or 6-12 months, whichever comes first.
TL;DR
- The 10,000 km service is a minor (routine) service.
- Match every item against your owner's manual; it overrides any generic list.
- Keep the receipt and log the service so the next one is easy to plan.
The 10,000 km service (about 6,200 miles) is a minor (routine) service on most manufacturer schedules. Use the checklist below as a starting point, then match it against the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, because intervals differ between makes, engines and driving conditions.
What's included in a 10,000 km service
| Item | What's usually done |
|---|---|
| Engine oil and filter | Change, or follow your oil-life monitor |
| Tire rotation | Rotate, then check pressure and tread depth |
| Brakes, fluids, lights, wipers | Visual check and top-ups |
| Cabin air filter | Inspect; replace if dirty (often every 15,000-25,000 miles or yearly) |
| Wiper blades | Replace if they streak or chatter (often every 6-12 months) |
Typical items only. Your owner's manual (or the manufacturer's online schedule, such as Toyota's) is the authority for your car. Our free car maintenance schedule generator builds a list for your exact mileage.
Normal vs severe driving schedule
Most manuals have two schedules. The severe (or "special operating conditions") schedule applies if you often make short trips under about 5 miles, drive in stop-and-go traffic, tow, carry heavy loads, drive on dusty or unpaved roads, or in extreme heat or cold. Many everyday drivers fall into it without realising. Severe schedules usually shorten oil, filter and fluid intervals, so a 10,000 km service on the severe schedule may include items that the normal schedule leaves for later.
Also check the time limit. Most schedules say "miles or months, whichever comes first". A car that covers few miles still needs oil, brake fluid and coolant changes on time, because oil and fluids age even when the car sits.
Is the 10,000 km service necessary?
If your service book lists 10,000 km, yes. In many markets the first one or two services of a new car are free or discounted, but the parts or oil may still be charged. Ask what's included before you go.
A simple rule: approve the items that appear in your manufacturer schedule for this mileage, plus anything the technician can show you is worn or leaking. Question extras such as "engine flushes" or "fuel system cleaning" that your manual doesn't list. AAA's maintenance myths guide is a useful reality check.
How much does a 10,000 km service cost?
There's no single price. Cost depends on your make and model, whether you go to a dealer or an independent shop, local labour rates, and above all which items are actually due. A service that's only oil and a rotation costs far less than one that includes fluids, plugs or a timing belt. Ask for an itemized written estimate and compare two shops.
For budgeting, AAA's 2025 Your Driving Costs study puts maintenance, repair and tires for a new car at about 11.04 cents per mile, which is roughly $1,656 a year at 15,000 miles. Real costs rise as a car ages. Our car maintenance cost calculator gives an estimate for your mileage and car age.
How long does it take?
Usually 1-2 hours at a dealer or workshop. Book ahead if the service includes bigger jobs, and ask whether a courtesy car or shuttle is available.
What you can check yourself
Keep an eye on the service sticker or the in-car service reminder, and write the date and odometer reading down each time. Between services, do a quick monthly check: tire pressures (cold, using the door-jamb placard, per NHTSA), oil level, coolant level, washer fluid and all lights.
Keep a record of the service
Write down the date, odometer reading, what was done, the shop and the cost. Keep the receipt. A complete history helps with warranty claims, makes the next service easier to plan, and supports a better resale price. In CarO you can log the service against the car, attach the cost, and set a reminder for the next one with the oil change reminder.

FAQ
What does a 10,000 km service include?
Usually engine oil and filter, tire rotation, brakes, fluids, lights, wipers, cabin air filter and an inspection of fluids, belts and lights. Exact items depend on your car, so compare the shop's list with the schedule in your owner's manual.
Is the 10,000 km service necessary?
If your service book lists 10,000 km, yes. Approve items listed in your manufacturer's schedule and anything the technician can show you is worn.
How much does a 10,000 km service cost?
It varies with your car, the shop and which items are due. Ask for an itemized estimate and compare two shops. AAA's 2025 study puts average maintenance, repair and tire costs for a new car at about 11 cents per mile.
How long does a 10,000 km service take?
Usually 1-2 hours at a dealer or workshop.
Can I skip the 10,000 km service if my car runs fine?
It isn't a good idea. Many wear items, such as old oil, worn pads or an ageing timing belt, give no warning before they cause damage. Missing scheduled services can also complicate warranty claims, so keep dated receipts for every service.
